Zhejiang is the first province in China to implement fully rural wastewater treatment. Since 2003, more than 90% of the villages in Zhejiang Province (23,753 in total) have built rural domestic wastewater treatment facilities. Among them, the treatment facilities in 20,465 villages have been in operation, and the treatment facilities in 82 counties (cities and districts) have commissioned professional treatment facilities.
